Trudeau visits N.Y.C. to build momentum as Canada, U.S. partner on critical minerals NEW YORK — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is in New York City to pitch America’s movers and shakers on the virtues of Canada as a trade and investment partner.Experts on both sides of the border hope to hear more about how Ottawa plans to rapidly grow its critical minerals sector. Former diplomat Louise Blais, now a senior adviser with the Business Council of Canada, says it’s time to detail the plan for getting those 21st-century riches out of the ground. Trudeau is hoping to capitalize on the momentum from what most observers say was a successful and productive visit last month from President Joe Biden. Today, he’s stopping in at Global Citizen NOW, an annual summit meeting of change-minded celebrities, activists and lawmakers.Trudeau is also scheduled to meet with a UN task force on sustainable development and speak to the influential Council on Foreign Relations think tank. This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 27, 2023.The Canadian Press

‘You couldn’t get away from it’: 1953 Coronation was major topic at Canadian schools Ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953, Kenneth Munro’s Grade 2 class studied the history of the monarchy, staged a play about the Royal Family and all 700 students at his northern Ontario school listened live on radio as she took her oath. Munro, a retired former history professor at the University of Alberta, recalled the crepe paper robe – complete with cotton balls and bunting – that he wore as a seven-year-old when cast as the incoming queen’s husband, Prince Philip, for the performance at his school in Longlac, Ont. “The whole community was really geared toward this event, and certainly at school, so that you couldn’t get away from it,” Munro, 77, said. “We were really steeped i...

Miss Manners: I don’t want to hurt the bride, but I have qualms about the wedding DEAR MISS MANNERS: I have a nephew who is getting married this coming June. His fiancee is a gem of a girl, but my nephew and I have almost no relationship.I am wondering if I should attend the wedding. He and his dad (my brother) are ardent right-wingers, while I describe myself as a “rabid liberal.” I know I will be ignored by the immediate family, and I’m not close to the extended family, either. My feeling is that I should just keep to myself and send them a nice gift. But at the same time, I don’t want to hurt my nephew’s bride. What say you?GENTLE READER: Unpleasant family duties are not a new invention, although Miss Manners recognizes that the level of unpleasantness is on the rise. You should not attend if you know that your presence will, through no fault of your own, cause a scene that will mar the event. Merely that you will be bored is a less convincing excuse. If you do not attend, nothing bars you from writing a charming letter to the bride,...

Dear Abby: My hairstylist’s obsession has become really annoying DEAR ABBY: I’ve been going to an excellent hairstylist for a year and a half. The problem is she doesn’t want me to have color on my hair. She wants me to let my hair go gray. I detest the idea. She keeps insisting it is “so pretty,” and she won’t let it go. During my last visit, she became almost combative about it. She said she had expected me to stop asking for color by now.She colors her hair a beautiful shade of red. When I asked her about it, she said that “she had the right because she was born with that color.”It is very hard to get a hairstylist who knows how to cut my hair. Why do you think this has become such an obsession with her, and what should I do?HATES THE GRAYDEAR HATES: What you should do is take control.Related ArticlesAdvice | Dear Abby: Am I overreacting to my European daughter-in-law’s behavior?
