‘Beau’ director Ari Aster is not afraid to freak people out

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:49:54 GMT

Beau may be afraid but Ari Aster certainly isn’t.Of the many words used to describe the writer-director’s previous two films — “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” — timidity was never of them. This is a filmmaker who has sent Toni Collette skittering across the ceiling and intricately arranged mutilated bodies the way some people make bouquets. But if any doubts remained about just how far Aster is willing to go, “Beau Is Afraid” should pacify them. Not because of the degree of terror within it; by Aster’s high standards, “Beau Is Afraid” is notably less ghastly than his first two outings. But it’s even more audaciously grotesque, more self-evidently pulled from its director’s psyche, more a work of a filmmaker’s unfiltered, runaway imagination.Rather than slotting in as a “horror” film, it can be categorized a little less neatly as a surreal three-hour Homeric odyssey about Jewish guilt, Oedipal...

SF Giants: The swing change that has keyed J.D. Davis’ early success

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:49:54 GMT

MIAMI — Gabe Kapler likes to see his players outside of their typical environment, the baseball world, which can too often feel like its own bubble. So one day this spring, the Giants manager invited one of the club’s relatively new additions, J.D. Davis, out for a meal. They got to talking, and the conversation turned to what Davis wanted to achieve in 2023.“Let’s just say he had really lofty goals. Coming off the sort of part-time player he was for us last year and the part-time player he was with the Mets, it was hard to visualize some of the goals that he had,” Kapler said. “Because how was he going to be that regular of a player for us?”Almost three weeks into the season, Davis hasn’t only forced his way into regular playing time, those goals don’t look so lofty anymore.Entering Tuesday’s game against the Marlins, Davis leads the team in home runs (4) and RBIs (13). Eighteen of his 35 balls in play have left the bat at 95 mph or h...

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR’s final appeals officer restored points Tuesday that had been stripped from Kaulig Racing for unapproved parts modifications to match the amendments made to Hendrick Motorsports’ penalty for the same infraction. Both teams were stripped of 100 championship points and 10 playoff points for having unapproved parts in inspection at Phoenix Raceway last month. Both teams appealed and a three-member panel restored the Hendrick points, but upheld $400,000 in fines and four race suspensions for four HMS crew chiefs. The Kaulig initial appeal upheld all the penalties and Kaulig took its case to NASCAR’s final appeals officer. In a rare statement, final appeals officer Bill Mullis said the restoration of points for driver Justin Haley came at NASCAR’s request “in the interest of fairness.”“During its opening remarks, NASCAR stated it believes that the violations did occur, the penalties were appropriate and the three-person appeals panel rul...
