Denver City Councilwoman Candi CdeBaca said she has been weathering a storm of criticism — some of which is racist and includes death threats — since an election forum on Thursday when she described a reparations strategy of taxing white-owned businesses. The barrage of hate speech particularly ramped up after a far-right and anti-LGBTQ social media account shared a clip of CdeBaca — who is running for reelection — at the forum, hosted by the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance. In that clip, CdeBaca discusses taxing white-owned businesses and offering the money to businesses owned by people of color.“Capitalism was built on stolen land, stolen labors and stolen resources,” CdeBaca, whose district covers much of Denver’s inner core, including Five Points and Globeville, said. “You could be collecting those extra taxes from white-led businesses all over the city and redistributing them to Black and Brown-owned businesses.”But CdeBaca told The Denver Post those c...

By SUSIE BLANN (Associated Press)KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia enacted a major security clampdown before Tuesday’s annual commemorations marking the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, curbing the use of drones and ride-sharing services in its largest cities — even jet skis on the canals of St. Petersburg — amid its 14-month war with Ukraine. At least 21 Russian cities canceled May 9 military parades — the staple of Victory Day celebrations across Russia — for the first time in years, Russian media said. Regional officials blamed unspecified “security concerns” or vaguely referred to “the current situation” for the restrictions and cancellations. It wasn’t clear whether their decisions were taken in coordination with the Kremlin.Last week, Russia — which hasn’t witnessed the carnage endured by Ukraine during the invasion — was rattled by ambiguous official reports that two Ukrainian drones flew into...

As pickleball continues to grow and flourish in the States, an influx of companies are jumping on the bandwagon and taking notice of the limited apparel options that are specific to pickleball. This booming industry has resulted in fierce competition in the market as existing brands shift their offerings toward the growing pickleball player population. But while the “corporate” brands try to capture the market, a brand new group of start-up companies are dedicating 100% of their efforts to pickleball. The difference in philosophy is clear; while the corporate brands focus on profits and market share, the start-ups are motivated by their love of the game. Bert I. Gordon made terrible movies for 60 years. He’s an inspiration.

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:08:17 GMT

Christopher Borrelli | Chicago TribuneCHICAGO — Bert I. Gordon, who died earlier this spring at 100, was the absolute worst filmmaker who ever lived. Or so some might argue. You’ve heard Ed Wood was the worst. Or Roger Corman. Or maybe Michael Bay. But Gordon was not lousy for one or two decades. He was a terrible filmmaker for about 60 years, and when he got around to writing his memoir in 2010 (“The Amazing Colossal Worlds of Mr. B.I.G.: An Autobiographical Journey”), it was the absolute worst book ever written by a filmmaker. To borrow from the lurid posters for his movies, his talent, such as it was, screamed: Amazing! Towering! Beyond Description! Just not in a good way. You could say I’m unkind. But there’s poetry to this life: Bert I. Gordon was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, seven years after Orson Welles was born in Kenosha. That’s the universe pranking us.Or God laughing.“Empire Of The Ants,” by actor and filmmaker Bert I. Gordon. Poster art with Joan Collins, 197...
