Ryder Cup: U.S. falls to epic deficit, and it gets even worse

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:46:00 GMT

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy — Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg put Europe in the record book with the shortest match in Ryder Cup history, a symbol of its utter dominance over the Americans at Marco Simone. The Americans trailed the Europeans 9½-2½ with four four-ball (best ball) matches to be played Saturday afternoon, followed by 12 singles matches Sunday. The American team’s seven-point deficit matches the biggest after three sessions in the five-session format. U.S. squads led by seven after three sessions in 1967 and 1975.The Scandinavia super duo — Hovland of Norway, the FedEx Cup champion, and Aberg of Sweden, only four months removed from college — beat Scottie Scheffler and Brooks Koepka so badly in foursomes Saturday morning that it was over in 2 hours, 20 minutes. The 9-and-7 victory was the biggest margin for any match over 18 holes in Ryder Cup history, a beating so bad that Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 player, was wiping away tears.Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood ou...

Downtown Ice returning to San Jose for the holiday season

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:46:00 GMT

Who says wishes don’t come true? After the long-running Downtown Ice rink in San Jose went on hiatus last year, the San Jose Downtown Association got the message that people considered it a vital part of their holiday season. So it’s back this year and will open in the Circle of Palms on Nov. 17.Last year, the company operating the ice rink pulled out too late for the city to find a comparable replacement. The San Jose Downtown Association sprang into action, and Liz Ruiz, owner of Aloha Skate at Eastridge Center, stepped up to produce a tropical-themed roller rink on the site. It was fine as a replacement, but it was obvious people were hoping for something, well, cooler.“People enjoyed roller skating, but we heard loud and clear that families and friends from all parts of Northern and Central California missed their tradition of coming to skate at our ice rink,” said Tricia Lee McNabb, who has managed rink operations since 1997.Livermore-based Special Ice, ...

Rahm says Koepka criticism was over something that wouldn’t register on ‘Jon anger’ scale

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 10:46:00 GMT

GUIDONIA MONTECELIO, Italy (AP) — Brooks Koepka could have used a board to pound Saturday in the Ryder Cup. Jon Rahm didn’t need one, and he doesn’t know what caused all the fuss.Koepka kept everyone guessing — about the incident, not his blunt nature — when he accused the Masters champion of pouting after their fourballs match Friday afternoon, which Rahm ended with a 35-foot eagle putt.“I mean, I want to hit a board and pout just like Jon Rahm did,” Koepka said in the television interview. “But you know, it is what it is. Act like a child. But we’re adults. We move on.”Rahm filled in the details, or what he could make of it, after he put up another point for Europe in Saturday foursomes.“I mean, I’m not going to stand here and say I’m a perfect example on what to do on a golf course. I don’t think either of us two are,” Rahm said as he sat next to Tyrrell Hatton, another player known for expressing his feelings for all to see. “But I play and compete.”The moment to whi...
