Granderson: Can Americans have a not-racist conversation about border security?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:47:48 GMT

I don’t understand the stripe of Americans whose first response to Hamas’ recent attack on Israel is “yeah, but ….” Hundreds of attendees at a music festival murdered. Children and elderly people taken hostage. Civilians shot dead in the streets. When it comes to war there are no angels, but there are demons, and what Hamas did last weekend represents the latter — full stop. However, I do understand the many Americans who see what Hamas did and think about the danger at our southern border — the Americans who are genuinely worried about the drug cartels’ growing influence in border towns and beyond. I do understand the part of America who saw last weekend’s horror and wondered how vulnerable we are to infiltration and attack, given the surge of asylum seekers and the U.S.’s inadequate systems for processing them.I do not agree with Nikki Haley, the GOP presidential candidate and former ambassador to the U.N., on much. However, I found a lot o...

No solo podrás ver el eclipse, también podrás sentirlo

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:47:48 GMT

Hurkacz powers past Korda to advance to Shanghai Masters final

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 07:47:48 GMT

SHANGHAI (AP) — Hubert Hurkacz served his way into the Shanghai Masters final with a dominant 6-3, 6-4 win over Sebastian Korda on Saturday. The 17th-ranked Polish player was untouchable on serve and didn’t face a break point.Hurkacz sent down 14 aces and denied Korda, who beat compatriot Ben Shelton in a quarterfinals thriller, any chance of finding his rhythm. As the pressure mounted on the 23-year-old American, Hurkacz pounced to take a vital break in each set to complete an impressive outing.“I’m working on being difficult to play against,” Hurkacz said. “It’s the same with every opponent. They try to come out with their best foot forward that day and they’re trying to (implement) their tactics or plan against you. You’ve just got to stay mentally strong and really battle.”Hurkacz, who won the Miami Masters in 2021, will play either Grigor Dimitrov or seventh-ranked Andrey Rublev, who play later Saturday.___AP tennis: https://apnews.com/hub/tennisSource

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Two-way standout Travis Hunter returned from a lacerated liver that sidelined him for three games and played the roles of both hero and goat in Colorado’s 46-43 collapse against Stanford on Friday night.Hunter led the Buffaloes with 13 catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns in his first game in nearly a month, and he collected five solo tackles on defense. But he also was burned by Cardinal star receiver Elic Ayomanor, whose school-record 294-yard performance was highlighted by a 30-yard touchdown catch in the first overtime. The stout sophomore corralled Ashton Daniels’ throw on the back of Hunter’s helmet, held on as their momentum took both into the end zone and lifted the ball over Hunter’s head just as he backpedaled in for the score.Coach Deion Sanders didn’t hold back on Hunter’s workload and when it was suggested that decision will be scrutinized in light of Ayomanor’s big day, Sanders retorted, “His condition...

In the West Bank, Horror Mixes with Fear of What’s to Come

Dalia Hatuqa is a freelance journalist based in Ramallah.RAMALLAH — My morning last Saturday, like so many others in this region of the world, began with a barrage of successive messages on my phone that startled me awake. I stood up and stared bleary-eyed into my phone. The headlines slowly burrowed into my foggy brain: Hamas had launched an operation and militants had broken through the fence that had kept Palestinians in Gaza under siege for 16 years.I sent frantic WhatsApp messages to friends from Gaza who live in the West Bank: My neighbor Ola told me her family had to flee their home to another part of the densely populated enclave. My friend Tahreer said five of her extended family were killed in Israeli shelling and her friend Eman had learned that her father, mother and brother had all died in an airstrike.Across the street from my house, a charity had opened its doors overnight to house Gaza-based workers who had been in Israel during the Hamas attack and who were expelled...

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian officials reported intense combat, characterized by relentless assaults by Russian forces, as the ongoing attack on an eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka entered its fifth consecutive day on Saturday.“The enemy has not stopped either assaulting or shelling positions” around Avdiivka, city head Vitalii Barabash said on Ukrainian television.Barabash also reported that Moscow was deploying additional forces to encircle the strategically important city in the eastern Donetsk region, situated just north of the Moscow-held regional capital, also called Donetsk.Around 1,600 civilians remain within the city, a stark contrast to its prewar population of about 31,000.Barabash’s comments came after Russia’s U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, told a U.N. Security Council meeting on Friday that the intensified attacks in the east amounted to a new stage in Moscow’s campaign in Ukraine.“Russian troops have, for several days now, switched over to active combat ...
