CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers believe they’ve finally found their franchise quarterback. The Panthers selected Alabama’s Bryce Young with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft on Thursday night, the first time the team has selected a QB with the top overall pick since Cam Newton in 2011.He becomes the first Alabama player selected No. 1 overall since Harry Gilmer in 1948.“It’s a dream come true,” Young said. “I’m blessed. I want to thank God for allowing me to be here.’’Young was 30-4 as a starter during three seasons with the Crimson Tide, throwing for 8,356 yards with 80 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions. He won the Heisman Trophy in 2021 after tossing 47 TD passes and helping Alabama go 13-2 and reach the College Football Playoff national championship game. The 5-foot-10, 204-pound Young is considered small by NFL standards, and is just the third quarterback since the merger shorter than 6 feet to be selected in the first round, joining Kyler Murray ...Texans get franchise QB, draft Ohio State’s Stroud at No. 2

HOUSTON (AP) — Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud was selected by the Houston Texans with the second overall pick in the NFL draf t Thursday night as the team addressed its most glaring need.Stroud was a two-year starter for the Buckeyes where he threw for 8,123 yards with 85 touchdowns and just 12 interceptions as Ohio State went 21-4. Stroud joins a team that has failed to find a reliable quarterback in the two seasons since Deshaun Watson requested a trade before being traded to the Cleveland Browns. Davis Mills has started most of the last two seasons, going 5-22-1 in 28 games with 26 starts as the Texans sunk to among the NFL’s worst teams. Stroud becomes the third quarterback Houston has selected in the first round, joining Watson, taken 12th in 2017 and David Carr, the team’s first draft pick who was the top overall pick in 2002. The Texans hired former player DeMeco Ryans to coach the team this offseason as they try to turn things around after winning just 11 games combined ...Three found dead in Fairfax Co. home in apparent domestic shooting

Two men and a woman were found dead in the basement of a Springfield, Virginia, home Thursday afternoon in what police said appeared to be a domestic shooting.Fairfax County Deputy Chief of Police for Investigations Eli Cory said the department got a call just after 3:45 p.m. from the housekeeper of a home in the 8500 block of Wild Spruce Drive. She told police she found three people dead in the basement of the house.Cory said police believe the housekeeper, a nanny and a 2-year-old child were the only other people home at the time of the shooting. All three are safe and accounted for, as are two other children who live in the home, but they weren’t there when the shooting happened. When officers showed up, they found a man, who appeared to be in his 40s, a woman in her 30s and a man who police said looked like he was in his 20s, all shot dead in the basement. The woman and the younger man both had multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, according to Cory. The older man had ...2023 NFL Draft Selections

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani earned another win on the mound despite giving up five runs in a nightmare fourth inning, and he also tripled, doubled and singled in the Los Angeles Angels’ 8-7 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.Ohtani (4-0) had his rockiest start in recent memory, yielding at least five runs and two homers for the first time in 18 starts since last July while also hitting a career-high three batters with pitches.Nearly all of the two-way superstar’s trouble occurred in the fourth, after he had thrown three perfect innings. Ohtani’s struggles were preceded by a breakdown in his PitchCom system, which he uses in lieu of traditional catcher-to-pitcher signals, but both Ohtani and manager Phil Nevin said those problems weren’t the main factor while Ohtani allowed seven baserunners, threw two wild pitches and lost a 5-0 lead.“He’s human,” Nevin said. “I kind of had to go up and down the dugout after the next half-inning, because it was...Carolina Panthers select Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with No. 1 pick in the NFL draft

Four Boston police officers were acquitted Thursday in a case linked to what prosecutors had described as an overtime pay scam. Timothy Torigian, Robert Twitchell, Henry Doherty and Kendra Conway were initially charged in 2020 along with five other officers. Charges were dropped against one officer, while four others pleaded guilty. The Department of Justice announced new charges in February of this year through a superseding indictment against Torigian, Twitchell, Doherty and Conway. The officers were accused of collectively embezzling more than $200,000 in overtime pay for hours they did not work.Lawyers for Torigian, Twitchell, Doherty and Conway told jurors they didn’t dispute the officers were paid for overtime hours they didn’t work. They said, though, that officers were also just following longstanding overtime procedures accepted by the Boston Police Department. The jury ultimately found the officers not guilty on conspiracy and fraud charges. How Lamar Jackson went from demanding to be traded to landing a lucrative 5-year deal with the Ravens

How did we get here? It’s a question that 56 days ago had a drastically different meaning than it does now. On March 2, Lamar Jackson told the Ravens that he wanted to be traded. Now he’s the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL in terms of average annual salary after agreeing to a five-year extension with Baltimore worth a reported $260 million, including $185 million guaranteed.“For the last few months there’s been a lot of he say, she say, a lot of nail-biting, a lot of head scratching going on,” Jackson said in a video message posted to the Ravens’ social media account shortly after the news broke. “But for the next five years, there’s a lot of ‘Flock’ going on.”How things went from a two-years-long stalemate over a long-term contract to a smiling Jackson in the back seat of a Bentley might seem surprising, but there were breadcrumbs along the way, starting with how the Ravens reacted when Jackson revealed his trade...Latest news
